Feb. 19, 1992 proposal
Atlanta (AP) - Hoping to do with Yogi Bear and Popeye
what he did with the news, Ted Turner on Tuesday announced
plans to launch a 24-hour all-cartoon network.
The Cartoon Network, a basic cable television channel,
will make it's debut Oct. !, Turner said. His fifth major
cable television network will feature cartoons from Turner
Broadcasting System Inc.'s vast stock of animated features,
which was bolstered last year by the $320 million purchase
of the Hanna-Barbera library.
With the acquisition of the MGM film library, which includes
"Tom & Jerry", TBS owns 3,800 half-hour blocks of cartoons.
"We got some terrific gems (with the MGM library), like
'Gone With the Wind' and 'Casblanca' said Scott Sassa,
president of Turner Entertainment Networks. "With this deal
we're getting gems like 'The Flintstones', 'The Jetsons' and
'Scooby Doo'".
Sassa said the Cartoon Network would try to lure children
into watching cartoons in prime time, between 8 and 10pm.

Turner Broadcasting will rely on the likes of "The Flintstones,"
"The Jetsons" and Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to power the Monday-
through-Friday primetime hours of its soon-to-be-launched Cartoon
Network.
Network executives say "The Flintstones" will kick off each
night, [scheduled] at 8 p.m. From there viewers will flow into
another cartoon family, "The Jetsons," at 8:30 p.m., with the
"Bugs & Daffy Tonight" block occupying 9 to 10:30 p.m.
Programming the 24-hour toon service, set to launch Oct. 1,
will be done in "elemental blocks" and half-hour strips culled
from more than 8,500 titles Turner has in its library of
Hanna-Barbera, MGM, Warner Bros. and Paramount animation.
On Saturday, "Bugs & Daffy" will move to the 8 p.m. slot
leading into an hourlong version leading into a "Flintstones"/
"Jetsons" hour. At 10 p.m., the web will present "Back To
Bedrock" and "Johnny Quest" at 10:30 p.m.
The schedule remains the same for Sunday nights with the
exception of the 10 to 11 p.m. block, during which the web will
show "The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley," an
animated series based on the Martin Short character, which aired
on NBC.
The network will use the animation already in the Turner
house for the launch, although as the network grows there is a
potential for product acquisitions and original productions.
Fans of unconventional and rarely seen animation are the
garget of a latenight show, "Toon Heads," planned for 11:30 to
11:45 p.m. The 15-minute offering is being programmed in theme
weeks featuring directors, short-lived characters and others.
For example, the first week will focus on the work of Tex Avery.
Daytime hours will be broken into four programming blocks
and packed with TBS catalog animation, with an emphasis on
Hanna-Barbera material.
